Bread for the ravens

Bread is a rare luxury for Roma families. It has to be bought and the money for it is usually lacking. Young Roma women learn to bake bread and pastries in the bakery and are trained in food science and hygiene. Two apprentices bake bread and pizza several times a week for the ELIJAH social centres. Within the framework of the household school, new recipes and skills are practised in workshops with Austrian bakers. Apple pie, Linzer Torte, Striezel and biscuits are already routine and are included in the programme on public holidays. The work strengthens the young women and creates a livelihood for them and their families.
