About Elijah

Roma aid in Transylvania

In 2012, Ruth Zenkert and Father Georg Sporschill SJ founded the ELIJAH association to support neglected Roma children and their families in Transylvania, Romania. The Roma receive direct and sustainable help to improve their living conditions. To get out of the deep misery into which they have fallen for generations.

The association got its name from Prophet Elijah. He stood up for the poorest and spoke out against injustice.

The project has grown steadily since it began in the village of Hosman, 30 kilometers west of Sibiu. Today, ELIJAH operates social centers, music schools, education and work projects , a dormitory for students and a new children’s shelter.
